LAHORE – Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday issued notices to the Punjab government and Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) over a plea filed for not acting on the laws designated for child labour.
The hearing of the case was conducted by Justice Shujaat Ali Khan. The petitioner said that children were being employed for the Orange Line Metro Train project in violation of child labour laws. The plea also stated that according to Employment of Children Act, children under the age of 14 years could not be engaged in labour work. The court after hearing the arguments issued notices to the Punjab government and Attorney General.
He said that the provisions of Employment of Children Act 1991 as well as Punjab Destitute and Neglected Children Act 2004 need to be enforced strictly, which the government has failed to implement across Punjab. He requested to order the government to enforce the child labour laws.
